And I finished it two weeks in advance, not the day of the event, so I was very pleased with myself. I texted Cheryl to say I would be brining the dress back to her that evening. Done and done. </p><p>But wait, there is more.....</p><p>When I got to Cheryl's home, neighbors were waiting there to see the dress. There was pizza. People patted me on the back and offered to get me drinks. The dress was handed around for each person to admire the new zipper I had just finished. Then a guy I didn't even know played <i>Pomp and Circumstance </i>on his phone while a tiny parade returned the dress to a place of honor in Cheryl's closet. I know, I couldn't believe it either. It was like being in a Beatrix Potter story. It was an actual mending party!</p><p>So I'm relaying this strange but beautiful circumstance to ask; how do you celebrate your craft?</p><p>Are you like me? The minute I finish a quilt, I start another quilt. </p><p>It has never occurred to me to be like Cheryl's neighborhood and truly recognize the finish. Even after <a href="https://roadhomequilting.blogspot.com/2019/02/visible-medning-review.html" target="_blank">reviewing Visible Mending</a> here on the blog, and believing i had a new found attitude of celebrating stitches, and thereby fearlessly creating more <a href="https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/RoadHomeQuilting/tools/listings/620908611" target="_blank">art pieces </a>, wow - it still never dawned on me to just honor a finish. </p><p>Next time... I'll wear my tiara. What will you do?</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_EeFsRoH4_HnZFZcu-j3cGj1R7j67ZYNUxW4lxGTt-ga7pMwk7uvsmPOqAqwbIeoPlKtGI-KVwmwDYx0YQ93Mcp8tv33-x6iqiALctnxZEcwI06UuZO54118CPOaco-48BgEO_APWMIE/s540/Destiny.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="540" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_EeFsRoH4_HnZFZcu-j3cGj1R7j67ZYNUxW4lxGTt-ga7pMwk7uvsmPOqAqwbIeoPlKtGI-KVwmwDYx0YQ93Mcp8tv33-x6iqiALctnxZEcwI06UuZO54118CPOaco-48BgEO_APWMIE/s0/Destiny.jpg" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p>Ronnihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11780106694157661848noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880317398621140079.post-65568181686902701872020-08-12T18:14:00.002-07:002020-08-12T18:14:35.535-07:00Bergamot Reveal<span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://payhip.com/b/VJla">Bergamot</a> is here!</span><div><br /></div><div>My writing club friend, Sylvia, asked me to design a cat quilt.</div><div>Sylvia raises those adorable Ragamuffin cats. If you don't mind matchy-matchy, you can create the end panels and the backing from only 2 yards. The backing will have 3 pieces. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">BTW, <i>Bergamot</i> has two background fabrics. Background B is the lower part of quilt, and makes a rug for catto sit on. You know, so he's not floating in a single background. Otherwise, he is simple row-by-row construction. The pattern even has a piecing chart for each row - foolproof:)</div>Ronnihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11780106694157661848noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880317398621140079.post-2505052798245862192020-07-03T11:41:00.004-07:002020-07-03T11:41:40.527-07:00Collage Quilt Planning <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The CQ print edition is heavy stock paper for a lasting quality you can refer to over and over.</div>

Plus, quilting just shows up better on matte, don't you agree? I appreciate quilt photos where you can see the grain line as well as the stitches. With printing this quality, you can <i>understand</i> the cutting edge modern features, not just read about them.</div>

I found this flannel log cabin in a vintage shop some years ago. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is small, about 30" square. The red centers are only 1/2"!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've always wished to try recreating this very clever design. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you seen this block before? Does it have a name?</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The leftover honeybun scraps from<i> Bergamot cat quilt</i> are ideal for this project!</div>

And there are even enough scraps for two colorways; orange and white. </div>

Here are the orange log-cabin flower centers. So far so good. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will get back with you about the white/green blocks. Honeybun centers finish at 1" square, so my project will be twice as large as the original vintage inspiration.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Don't you just love it when a wish quilt comes together? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this case, one honeybun is making 3 dream quilts! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(<i>Bergamot,</i> orange log-cabin, white log-cabin)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
BTW: <i>Bergamot</i> is with the photographer. </div>

As soon as I have a pattern cover pic, you will see it in the Etsy shop.</div>

She said the news was inspiring. Here are my stories, so you can judge for yourself.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">A young couple with a new baby came in. They had just received their stimulus check and asked me to help them pick a serger. They wanted to sew their own baby clothes.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">Half a dozen men with no sewing experience have come into the shop. They were all starting mask making businesses because they had been laid-off from work. They were fearlessly learning to sew, read patterns, and set-up Etsy shops.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">Likewise, the design school students. Imagine having fashion design as an online course, and thus unexpectedly having to teach yourself sewing when you had been promised to learn in class. One young man had bought a sewing machine on Offer-Up; no ankle, no feet, nothing good. I was able to Frankenstein some working parts together for him from different brands that he could afford. BTW, there are 3 design schools in our region. When I finished high school here, you had to go to New York for fashion school. So I especially love helping the baby designers.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">Speaking of beginning sewers, a lady came in for "the cheapest easiest machine you have. I don't even want to learn sewing, and the minute this is all over I am donating that machine to a church or someplace." She went on to explain that her husband was a police officer, and he was allocated only one mask per day, which was too dirty for use long before lunchtime. She was learning to sew in order to make him mask covers. I said, "Sure I'll give you the cheapest machine. But you'll be back for an upgrade when the sewing bug gets you." You know mask making is only a gateway hobby. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">Lots
of mom and daughters have also come in for "starter" machines. They are
learning to sew together with their bonus home school time. One lady had
twins, and I found a good sale for her so she was able to get a machine for

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">Speaking of sewing time, one night close to closing, a nurse stopped by the shop, wearing her scrubs on the way to work. She was living in her garage while her husband worked from home with their two toddlers. The family comes to the window to wave bye to their mom when she goes to work. She told me that even with the hospital overtime, she was so bored in her garage room. She had asked her husband to bring the sewing machine outside for her because she had always wanted to learn quilting. I said you sure have come to the right place, and I showed her every dream ruler foot, ditch walking foot, you know, everything you wish you had when you started quilting. I was also fair to outline options for her, cheaper ways to get started, etc. But she said, "I will never again have this much money and time all at once. I'm going large - wrap it all up."</span></span><br />

Texture! My favorite aspect of crochet. This new <b>Leisure
Arts</b> book, <a href="http://shrsl.com/23if5" target="_blank">Overlay Crochet: 10 Projects Add Dimensions and Style to YourHome by Kristi Simpson</a>, creates crochet texture in fabulous new ways.
“Dimension and style” is no joke here. Look what I made:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0tLdcBW-5UPvHect6T_h7hYqsbdfhuU9Yyk_hSADMIq3oVtENxc6BVWSB_gPKadnmvvQUXwU1fqjqjeTaJpbTvuVXNvqdnZ9LHRh2F1ux6CY-gQE4lYkiba-hAO4BQpgqSDdWCSletk/s1600/IMG_20200131_174157262%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1365" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0tLdcBW-5UPvHect6T_h7hYqsbdfhuU9Yyk_hSADMIq3oVtENxc6BVWSB_gPKadnmvvQUXwU1fqjqjeTaJpbTvuVXNvqdnZ9LHRh2F1ux6CY-gQE4lYkiba-hAO4BQpgqSDdWCSletk/s320/IMG_20200131_174157262%257E2.jpg" width="273" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Kristi’s book Features a variety of projects:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>table décor, pillow, box, hand towel,
blanket, ottoman pouf, wall hanging (mandala), granny square style blanket (but
it’s not your granny’s style!), and an amazing boho crossbody bag – which is
going to be next project, for sure.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I have always shied away from colorful crochet projects
because I dislike changing threads. But Krisit has solved that, detailing 5
ways to join yarns. When you use this book, start with the <i>General
Instructions</i> at the end (pg. 57). You’ll be amazed at the new tricks even
before you dive into the gorgeous projects. Plus, there is a guide at the very
end where you can get the exact project yarns Kristi used. I will definitely be
hunting the original colors when I try this cover model table mat. Ideal
springtime flavors!<br />
<br />
Believe it or not, almost all the projects are rated Easy
skill level. The Pillow is certainly Intermediate. Box is the beginner level project.
My project was this gorgeous hand towel (pg. 48).<br />

<br />
LOL – I made a simple mistake
right at the begging, setting 9 posts instead of 8. So mine turned out
pentagram instead of square and I love it! And it was still easy to finish. I
think it looks like a poppy. I’m going to make a few more and see what a
blanket of these would be like. Round, I guess. What do you think?<br />
<br />
I really love this book – it’s going to keep me busy and
happy all year :)<br />

Wait, I mean of the new decade:) Remember I promised to share my favorite <a href="https://www.quiltinghub.com/" target="_blank">Quilting Hub</a> feature with you? Here we go - TRIP PLANNER<br />
<br />
To begin, chose the MAPS AND TRIPS button on the QuiltingHub.com home page.<br />
Now, there are several ways to find all the quilty things happening around you.<br />
<br />
Tell<a href="https://www.quiltinghub.com/Maps" target="_blank"> QH Trip Planner </a>your location. Then set the mileage bar above the map to the distance you are willing to travel. Voila! You have pins marking everything quilting in the given radius. Too much? Un-check the options above the mileage bar to limit your search to just sales or just hops, etc.<br />
<br />
Traveling? Set both the TO and FROM locations. Now, limit your search with the calendar bar to see all the quilt events along the road for the time you are traveling.<br />
<br />
Need to search for a specific hop or exhibit? Use the OTHER TOOLS menu on the right. Drill down to the geographic region you are interested in. Instead of MAP, choose the MONTH view to see event dates.<br />
<br />
And anytime you want specifics for a pin that interests you, use the LIST view. There be all the specifics; address, dates, registration, other notes or requirements.<b> VIEW DETAILS button takes you to the Quilting Hub page for that entry.</b><br />
<b></b><br />
Lastly, remember Quilting Hub Trip Planner is Interactive- if you know of an event or shop not listed, you can add it at the bottom of the page.<br />

<span style="font-size: x-small;">Apologies for the blur - I'm learning new phone/camera settings.</span><br />
The black and white border is bugle beads in-the-ditch. And the binding is variegated crewel yarn whip-stitch. I like how the quote stitching crosses the background and first border.<br />

I have to make special mention of the smokestack - it <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXElasaKv-o" target="_blank">came down (video)</a> 9 months ago. A landmark for 100-ish years, all gone. But commemorated in quilting and plenty more local arts :)<br />

So I've asked PreQuilt inventor Gar Liu to share more news here about how PreQuilt started and where it is going.<br />
<br />
To begin with, a brief history. [Literally short-- <b><a href="https://prequilt.com/" target="_blank">PreQuilt</a></b> is just one year old!]<br />
<b>PreQuilt</b> began last July with<a href="https://commonwealthquilts.com/" target="_blank"> Laura Henneberry's</a> (Commonwealth Quilts)<a href="https://commonwealthquilts.com/" target="_blank"> Circus Tent Quilt</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicwDHy4SzGWK0IzfOS-EBZYkecYXoLL84K1ZgJ4gDb8Qbm-9iFXr5XJCtYylnqI-SkZpeIMyshoZFgmUkJEkS44RdCIG6TMeYqBQ-mvj_ZH_Q7aUvkd3rh25AJO5KXh3ZqqN6FaMBDyNQ/s1600/Cover_PDF_540x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="699" data-original-width="540" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicwDHy4SzGWK0IzfOS-EBZYkecYXoLL84K1ZgJ4gDb8Qbm-9iFXr5XJCtYylnqI-SkZpeIMyshoZFgmUkJEkS44RdCIG6TMeYqBQ-mvj_ZH_Q7aUvkd3rh25AJO5KXh3ZqqN6FaMBDyNQ/s320/Cover_PDF_540x.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
And it has evolved quickly from a color picking app, to an HST design tool, to a full application design platform. More designers joined, wishing coloring pages for their quilts too. Quilter/programmer <span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1d2228; display: inline; float: none; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://stephskardal.com/" target="_blank">Steph Skardal</a> supplied the fabric catalogue. The latest feature is the custom block design tool. </span></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you tried PreQuilt? Check out the color randomizer <a href="https://youtu.be/4vVWkNvvLOI" target="_blank">in this video</a>.</div>
<br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1d2228; display: inline; float: none; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">According to Gar, PreQuilt's best features are the one's that short-cut repetitive tasks, such as selecting quilt quadrants or checkerboard blocks for quilt design editing. This way, designers can stay focused on their planning, without getting discouraged by minutia. </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1d2228; display: inline; float: none; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Gar says, "<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1d2228; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;">We hope that PreQuilt can leave people in an art director's position where they make decisions and then come in to tweak. Something like a self driving car where you can put your hands on the wheel at anytime to take back control."</span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1d2228; display: inline; float: none; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1d2228; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; word-wrap: break-word;"><br /></span></span></span>

<br />
<b><a href="https://prequilt.com/" target="_blank">PreQuilt</a></b> by Gar Liu and Laura Henneberry, is more than a quilt design tool. It is also a pattern shop and comprehensive color picker. What does that mean? Well......<br />
<br />
To begin with, get a quilt design:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="https://shop.prequilt.com/" target="_blank">Shop </a>designer quilt patterns ($12+)</li>
<li>Try 5<a href="https://app.prequilt.com/shop/poppyprint/roundpeg" target="_blank"> Starter Kit</a> designs</li>
<li><a href="https://app.prequilt.com/demo" target="_blank">Design</a> your own quilt</li>
<ul>
<li>Mix your quilt from 24 block library</li>
<li>Create your own blocks from 11 basic shapes<b> including hexagon</b></li>
<li>Keep your quilt private, or receive a URL when you opt-in for public sharing.</li>
</ul>
<li>Choose from 27 fun quilt top <a href="https://app.prequilt.com/shop/lethargiclass/rise" target="_blank">"Colour Pages"</a></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;"></span>Next, choose fabric colors - <i>the exact designer name and number</i> - from 9 contemporary fabric houses: Kona, Free Spirit, American Made Brand, AGF, Michael Miller, Moda, Riley Blake, RJR, Paintbrush Studio. </div>
<ul>
<li>Search all brands together or limit selections to what your LQS stocks. </li>
<li>Look for specific colors by rainbow or alphabetically by name <span style="font-size: x-small;">[I especially like this "A-Z" feature for finding your go-to blender.]</span></li>
<li>S<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">till can't find the exact color you need</span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">? A standard RBG color picking option is also included.</span></li>
<li>Create and save a "custom palette."</li>
</ul>
<div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">
Then....yes, there's more!.....download your new design, including block count and color ID chart. Yes, you heard that right - you get a shopping list of the exact colors you just picked.<br />
<br /></div>
<b></b><i></i><u></u><strike></strike></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The most exciting feature in PreQuilt are the randomizers. </span></div>
<div>
In Quilt Design, you can "randomize" your block selection, placement and/or rotation. Check out this random quilt pattern I made using just 2 blocks , Rail Fence and Zeus:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7YX7vpWVUxgu74371xuZt_jT3PBTDqnP7JF9nJQeVlHQZcOIPEmB6DQfE7qLJaZbIzBv2kFisPFZ3KNasRtysYHasSf78Y1_U1I_UjCGiaTl18_YnlSO_tkztSBptr7sum8vBQZVj5zw/s1600/2block.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="604" data-original-width="484" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7YX7vpWVUxgu74371xuZt_jT3PBTDqnP7JF9nJQeVlHQZcOIPEmB6DQfE7qLJaZbIzBv2kFisPFZ3KNasRtysYHasSf78Y1_U1I_UjCGiaTl18_YnlSO_tkztSBptr7sum8vBQZVj5zw/s320/2block.png" width="256" /></a></div>
<div>
You can imagine what happens when you randomize color picking! </div>
<div>
Lock in colors you like, then keep randomizing until you find ideal color placements for every patch.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do you want to hear more about PreQuilt? Okay, here are some nuts and bolts:</div>
<ul>
<li>PreQuilt works on any platform; mobile, laptop, etc., but not Internet Explorer. You only need a modern browser and you are in.</li>
<li>There are 3 access levels: Demo (no registration required), Free Forever, and Basic ($50/year).</li>
<li>Every tool has a handy "learn about" link to an<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvp7Ncrl47wDHGcBP7vac8A" target="_blank"> instructional YouTube video</a>. However, not all of these links automatically open in new windows. Take precautions so you don't loose your work when surfing off for a quick lesson. </li>
<li><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">Hack: scroll mouse to easily enlarge quilt view</span><b></b><i></i><u></u><strike></strike></li>
</ul>
<div>
Have you tried PreQuilt? I'm wondering if PreQuilt has expanded your views on color theory? Or, if you have tried the design platform, go ahead and leave your PreQuilt pattern link in the comments, I'd love to see your design!</div>

July is almost here! Time to start the holiday projects, right?</div>

I changed the bottom border so it would look more like a tablecloth;);) </div>

It's started a mending movement! <br />
<br />
As I am forever mending jeans, I thought this book would add some excitement to the chore. But it is much more than that. I found this a handbook for challenging your creativity in a new functional turn.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="308" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbtOzhuxk3UJouAbTRVXrawo_nqDOSCm1imcoz2FSubTSxUZFqg5C1IhHJthgiTATmStxIrjaLMp25pHQZyEtDCCPgkTJbjM1ohRm9-1bPtR1edZ4yWRyqXcrq19W4TEIuV3QaVt7r5pc/s400/9781604689358_l.jpg" width="307" /></div>
<br />
To begin with....yes, the beginning is the best part of this book! Only a page, but artfully challenging you to "see the beauty in the broken." <br />
<br />
From the start <em>Visible Mending</em> is more than a how-to book. Each chapter: <br />
<ul>
<li>Boro</li>
<li>Hand Embroidery</li>
<li>PATCHES (my favorite)</li>
<li>Darning (new to me)</li>
<li>Mending by Machine (free motion)</li>
</ul>
carries a new philosophy for celebrating scars "as an opportunity for one-of-a-kind creativity."<br />
<br />
Of course, each chapter also shares insights on the unique tools and skills needed for it's particular technique. But more importantly, <em>Visible Mending</em> shows you how to look beyond the skill lessons to the catalog of<br />
<ol>
<li>what type of blemish is best repaired with that technique</li>
<li>what fabrics can each technique be applied to.</li>
</ol>
<em>Visible Mending</em> could have as easily been organized by tear, hole, stain..... <br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
or sweater, denim, t-shirt, linen, see! </div>
<br />
Here is my first project inspired by <em>Visible Mending</em>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvegwMds9m-voyWk6Wafwb6bxsPf-Axu3Ufk4H5gPlR7i1usOagXGfpzh7nYR-mV878AY-cYmScxNh3WdlYSWlk-tYj7XbIOh0B5quVLaiUQp1vuAn11nyEmMwkEdKUltouoRrhZk9H3g/s1600/2018082095192403.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1201" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvegwMds9m-voyWk6Wafwb6bxsPf-Axu3Ufk4H5gPlR7i1usOagXGfpzh7nYR-mV878AY-cYmScxNh3WdlYSWlk-tYj7XbIOh0B5quVLaiUQp1vuAn11nyEmMwkEdKUltouoRrhZk9H3g/s320/2018082095192403.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Yes, it is a jeans patch, ringed with Boro stitching :) Now instead of a tear, it's a statement! Instead of working to hide my work, I spent just as much time making something to show! See how it works?<br />
<br />
By the time you get to the end of the book, I guarantee you'll be searching your wardrobe for old clothes to turn into statement pieces. And the next time you spill on your new outfit, you'll be thinking, "oooh, now I get to mend this:)"Ronnihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11780106694157661848noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6880317398621140079.post-37030652148831146502019-02-14T10:19:00.000-07:002019-02-14T10:19:00.979-07:00Donna's Quilty ValentineA new <a href="https://roadhomequilting.blogspot.com/p/4lqs.html" target="_blank">Pearl's Post</a> poem was planned for today. But I'm' postponing it in favor of a new story related to <a href="http://roadhomequilting.blogspot.com/2019/02/nurses-block.html" target="_blank"><em>Quilting Nurses</em></a>, one that is perfectly suited for celebrating this Valentine's Day. <br />
<br />
Dad was again in the hospital this week, just for testing, and he is doing great. It was a new hospital, very nice yet unfamiliar to us. Imagine how happy I was to see this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiywp60Oz2OL46AkSs4KS11SQ4KLXk5TD_EPWdQXeKx9ntpibgOc44QiwcUnolMyb4IXGKFSayOq4RdVfund6bJlS1G-C2uJb1Wxu8wgrfjGwRumdIsmuVCMUfTgRxnZ3xPrGlK6yWwQ4/s1600/IMG_20190214_072552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="442" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiywp60Oz2OL46AkSs4KS11SQ4KLXk5TD_EPWdQXeKx9ntpibgOc44QiwcUnolMyb4IXGKFSayOq4RdVfund6bJlS1G-C2uJb1Wxu8wgrfjGwRumdIsmuVCMUfTgRxnZ3xPrGlK6yWwQ4/s400/IMG_20190214_072552.jpg" width="352" /></a></div>
<br />
There were six giant framed batik blocks decorating the hospital main corridor! A tag on each frame said, <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Created by Donna Smith in loving memory of Donald Smith"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What a lovely tribute! See why I wanted this news for a Valentine's Day post? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Do you think Donna is a local quilter? I hope I get to meet her some day. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then I can tell her, thanks Donna, for the extra effort in framing your blocks, and making our hospital stay more beautiful and homey and bringing peace to my heart.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>Happy Valentine's Day</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>

And I wished to create a block that would commemorate quilting nurses.<br />

<em>Trip Around the World</em> patched in silk, with silk panels for backing. Tied, no batting. <strong>Very heavy.</strong> One of the green silks shattered but the rest is in surprisingly excellent shape. And best of all.....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Silk prairie point border:)<br />
This genuinely makes be smile. I mean, you couldn't put binding on the silk, right? So the quilter had to invent a different edging. <br />
<br />
Wow, they sure were dedicated to making this quilt happen. I think Leana has discovered it:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYHk6sVj5Xz_g0km_1gMgn825H3sdyIrf5K7Z5hBxQ6P9UldZ3HTgoxfXmHDzSWKhDywVJF6iUXnT1fdsnTl7hjBU4uLJowGcZAhbb0ziHHt8mdwfkmjAAOsegPuye0QbgWWJ-hYY347Q/s1600/IMG_20180722_115345.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYHk6sVj5Xz_g0km_1gMgn825H3sdyIrf5K7Z5hBxQ6P9UldZ3HTgoxfXmHDzSWKhDywVJF6iUXnT1fdsnTl7hjBU4uLJowGcZAhbb0ziHHt8mdwfkmjAAOsegPuye0QbgWWJ-hYY347Q/s320/IMG_20180722_115345.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Leana mixed pictorial embroidery, colored pencil, and silk ribbon with crochet from her grandmother.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6CsfyomkNohQ7i-WmohOzYHlKL8XjT9FahrpPMpnrNSfSQ1lx0EAnZgwhsIJqfShC3_MI316NCoET2NSLUDo-2HlLIB_Uh-C20RXbuWlH-jXq483LkMVCl0cjCNdT8rauy5wOVPca4H8/s1600/IMG_20180722_115650.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6CsfyomkNohQ7i-WmohOzYHlKL8XjT9FahrpPMpnrNSfSQ1lx0EAnZgwhsIJqfShC3_MI316NCoET2NSLUDo-2HlLIB_Uh-C20RXbuWlH-jXq483LkMVCl0cjCNdT8rauy5wOVPca4H8/s400/IMG_20180722_115650.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Blocks are large enough to frame/border the featured handwork, in addition to serving as interesting backgrounds.<br />

Plus, the blocks are <a href="http://blog.modafabrics.com/2017/10/victoria-alberts-william-morris/" target="_blank">William Morris</a>. You wouldn't guess it, but the detail and scale of this fabric perfectly compliments the white and cream crochet alike. <br />

Mostly outline quilted by hand. This block is a wonderful exception.<br />

<br />
Leana's only tip was to spend ages at the design wall considering each placement. <br />
There are no empty or setting blocks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Leana says she will never show this quilt because it is too precious to risk. <br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
I'm so honored we got to see it:)</div>

<br />
People were extra kind to me when Alex was born, so I'm honored to welcome Mary to the club of motherhood<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
.....with a quilt, of course:)</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiycB9ajlbWbq9ENWw1ZkZToki0I6KOOzX0vfjYyeFVklOVGLYqMPwaXBssqeO1RFV9YhLltQN18dqT6sPrRhiSo5rSHEHuctyL80Xl4SfgB8y7PBrNHhJHysVCW8t1DrKL8Wsp76SPSgI/s1600/IMG_20171018_173417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1586" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiycB9ajlbWbq9ENWw1ZkZToki0I6KOOzX0vfjYyeFVklOVGLYqMPwaXBssqeO1RFV9YhLltQN18dqT6sPrRhiSo5rSHEHuctyL80Xl4SfgB8y7PBrNHhJHysVCW8t1DrKL8Wsp76SPSgI/s400/IMG_20171018_173417.jpg" width="396" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I planned a quick whole cloth quilt, just stitching the motifs of this wonderful <em>Oh Deer!</em> (Moda). It is <a href="http://roadhomequilting.blogspot.com/2013/06/aussie-tea-party.html" target="_blank">a favorite</a> in my stash, waiting for an extra special occasion like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjow3iMQfFe3pM_56bsQCo8ofK2L9JOX5HY5agwqn3w5nIyRjzb4vFF8Ku-TyodzaO6aIwILuS42PR1Q5fo-6SRTw-aNDeRtRO8pW496rs_i3gjtJsL2CdcjOV8ILHVuc4hJPtJ3qXBJSA/s1600/IMG_20171018_174058.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1231" data-original-width="1600" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjow3iMQfFe3pM_56bsQCo8ofK2L9JOX5HY5agwqn3w5nIyRjzb4vFF8Ku-TyodzaO6aIwILuS42PR1Q5fo-6SRTw-aNDeRtRO8pW496rs_i3gjtJsL2CdcjOV8ILHVuc4hJPtJ3qXBJSA/s320/IMG_20171018_174058.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But when I found <em>Pooh's Day in the Park</em> (Quilters O-N-L-Y) in the stash, I got carried away piecing the back....until it turned into a one-block star<em> </em>set in apples and beets (radishes?) on blue by Leslie Beck (Cranston). </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
See, both fabrics have bees! I call that matching, and ideal for a baby quilt:) And once again I am playing in the <a href="http://roadhomequilting.blogspot.com/2017/10/paper-star.html" target="_blank">gingham stash</a>. Love having an excuse for the geometric in large scale. </div>

As soon as her little guy is born, Mary has to go back in the Army. <br />
I made <strong>Star of Hope</strong> so wherever she goes, Mary will know that her baby is wrapped in her dreams.<br />

Especially as they are supplying the novelty prints!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiaNggpxn8WhBK2n-xONG_7IUl9unexX9EqZs1hpss5LoRT6V3-tuYE5C8vrL_7k4UiPfrR2x70a80UjeWLHsfXPZI1XfNZOmUVfG-GhohDPivWeMzbEVUDRp8FOtdb4_cms7MzK7MZPo/s1600/IMG_20171018_173238.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1405" data-original-width="1600" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiaNggpxn8WhBK2n-xONG_7IUl9unexX9EqZs1hpss5LoRT6V3-tuYE5C8vrL_7k4UiPfrR2x70a80UjeWLHsfXPZI1XfNZOmUVfG-GhohDPivWeMzbEVUDRp8FOtdb4_cms7MzK7MZPo/s320/IMG_20171018_173238.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This first one is from pre-quilted yardage. There is stabilizer in the band, and 1/4" binding on the handles. This was fun, and I like how it looks with 4 fabrics.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeJHHEhe-okY2NU7AIlzP1d7GuF7xo0GvwNqNx3XAKbM6PEri4L5hZpWxBTMiQpaWx7I14U90AQ5t6T4zL2aP5mJLGU9FXoK_-JoNiNhfBHJfOOZlzpxIDs9DfWOa5yJHpRD4Ju-f8LOY/s1600/IMG_20171018_102744213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeJHHEhe-okY2NU7AIlzP1d7GuF7xo0GvwNqNx3XAKbM6PEri4L5hZpWxBTMiQpaWx7I14U90AQ5t6T4zL2aP5mJLGU9FXoK_-JoNiNhfBHJfOOZlzpxIDs9DfWOa5yJHpRD4Ju-f8LOY/s320/IMG_20171018_102744213.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For the casino bag, I diamond quilted 2 novelty prints with regular foot and guide arm. I made big 1.5" diamonds in Warm & Natural scraps. This time the stabilizer is in the straps instead of the band. This bag took forever.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6z2kOIcE8VhiWwwEEj7qYurmn2Ir3DAX1f2vpXfosPKHXWADP3JwYN93aPHr7HUnIAamzhyphenhyphen5T9IJ_mmhttR1OJC27Vacd1qFTs3-W4n78ok3M_QQDjWhS_61e0mebtipTgf86g6HjYg/s1600/IMG_20171019_081416267.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6z2kOIcE8VhiWwwEEj7qYurmn2Ir3DAX1f2vpXfosPKHXWADP3JwYN93aPHr7HUnIAamzhyphenhyphen5T9IJ_mmhttR1OJC27Vacd1qFTs3-W4n78ok3M_QQDjWhS_61e0mebtipTgf86g6HjYg/s320/IMG_20171019_081416267.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Next time I'll try a loftier craft bat, and smaller quilting motifs, more like the premade stars-n-stripes. And I need to do something to save time on these. Maybe fusible batting and a full lining, instead of the reversible band? <br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Do you have any timesaving tricks for bag design?</span><br />
