Go with Quilting Hub Trip Planner

It is our first quilty tech report of the new year. Wait, I mean of the new decade:) Remember I promised to share my favorite Quilting Hub feature with you? Here we go - TRIP PLANNER

To begin, chose the MAPS AND TRIPS button on the QuiltingHub.com home page.
Now, there are several ways to find all the quilty things happening around you.

Tell QH Trip Planner your location. Then set the mileage bar above the map to the distance you are willing to travel. Voila! You have pins marking everything quilting in the given radius. Too much? Un-check the options above the mileage bar to limit your search to just sales or just hops, etc.

Traveling? Set both the TO and FROM locations. Now, limit your search with the calendar bar to see all the quilt events along the road for the time you are traveling.

Need to search for a specific hop or exhibit? Use the OTHER TOOLS menu on the right. Drill down to the geographic region you are interested in. Instead of MAP, choose the MONTH view to see event dates.

And anytime you want specifics for a pin that interests you, use the LIST view. There be all the specifics; address, dates, registration, other notes or requirements. VIEW DETAILS button takes you to the Quilting Hub page for that entry.

Lastly, remember Quilting Hub Trip Planner is Interactive- if you know of an event or shop not listed, you can add it at the bottom of the page.

This is the Northcott panel of Flag with fireworks.  And there are real lights in it!

Yes, a fireworks quilt that lights up! Holiday lights string quilted in, with just the bulbs strategically showing through. The lights kept blinking, so it was hard to get a good pic.

Third Generation by Pamela Snow

This is sew super special. Modern and vintage meeting. Family portrait of quilters. And just a great plan for preserving fragile unfinished blocks. The blocks were made by a great aunt, now finished in raw-edge applique by her modern quilter niece.

I knew you'd love this one tool:)

Local Themed Quilts

Here is our Saguaro Sunset hanging in a good company at show. And do you know what? It came home with some nice judges comments. Don't laugh, ok? But I thought judge comments were only for quilts with ribbons. This entering show stuff is so fun! I love a report card!!
OK, you must be laughing by now, very well. But the way I see it, if you've already gone to all the work of finishing the thing, and you really want to get better in the art, why not take a report card when you have the chance? I'm going to find more quilt contests:):):)

The View Before They Jump by Trudy Cowan

Forest Fires are a big deal here. This is Trudy's Smokejumpers quilt. There are variegated logs quilted in the tiny border. The "smoke" is wool roving and the "fire" is machine stitching. Even in my bad phone pic you can see the depth Trudy crated by stitching half the trees before putting the backing on. Genius! Trudy says the background fabric is something hand dyed she found in an estate sale, and it has sat in stash for ages waiting for the perfect quilt! Don't you love happy stash stories?

Mogollon Rim Strata by Catherine Clark

You thought there would be lots of cactus quilts in this post? Wait, they are coming;)

But canyons and their resulting exposed rock layers are such a part of our state landscape, even school kids here can name the strata. Catherine is so creative; stash comes in strata too, right? BTW, There was a MQG retreat on the Rim last year. I wonder if Catherine's quilt started there?

 

Blooming Desert by Barbara Nicholson

You know Prickly Pear is my favorite:) Do you have a favorite cactus? Barbara's is extra cheery, fun batiks, perfect orange+green. Prickly pears bloom yellow and pink too, but I've found these orange blossoming ones have the best pears for making jelly.

 

Fork & Spoon by Liz Stark

How fun for a southwest kitchen! Reverse Applique? More "strata," this time desert novelty prints.

Yes, kitchens need quilts too, right?

Okay this next one is unusual. It is a group strip quilt in progress. I hope you can see all the fun details in this collage. There is a studio with a big window on a flower garden with quail. There's a hogan with quilts on a clothesline. And there is Sue and Sam flying a kite by delectable mountains. I've posted the attribute card at the end. I understand this will be next year's raffle quilt for guild. For sure, I'm saving for these tickets! Can you imagine when this all quilted!?!

Finally got these quilt show pictures out of my phone, thanks to Alex's help.
Yes, I am old enough to realize how silly that sounds. Remember when pictures were something you picked up from the Kodak Kiosk in the grocery store parking lot? Alex doesn't believe me.

Surprise Quilt Show

Most Saturday mornings I travel 10 miles East to the next tiny town for Writers Club.
But yesterday when I arrived, look what I found!

"Mom. they're following you," she wrote back.

I kept asking every stranger I met, "Where are the rest of the quilts?"

Finally, someone took me to the "craft room." Where I found...

and...

And for Writers' Club? Our group has grown to ten, yet everyone writes something extremely different. Success of the moment goes to Bill, who's screenplay is in post production!

October Auction Small Quilts

It was a dark and stormy night...

Really!  Didn't think I would get to attend small quilt auction at guild last night. I travel 30 miles to guild meets. Not fun with flash floods warnings all day.
But the storm cleared around sunset, and Alex helped making diner and medications for her Grandpa, and I hadn't been to a quilt show in a long time so....off I go.

And glad I did! I got to share 2 witch hats in auction, which were well received, thanks ladies:)
Here are my faves from the mini quilt show auction:

Swoon Houses! Look- the doorways are fussy cut with tiny women. Sew Clever! LUV when a classic pattern gets a unique twist. Totally worth the trip!

Halloween Cat and Moon: Just adorable applique. I never think of batik for moon and starts. Darlene's quilts always make me smile.

Applique Bouquet:  LUV a scrappy background. This one is extra clever;

"tablecloth" portion of background is quilted with crosshatches, to differentiate from rest of background. Can you see?

Witch Sue:  Most Sues are applique, but this one is very cleverly foundation pieced. Sparkly star stickers added on her hat. Cute!

Quiltigami:  Origami kimono, first I've seen in real life! This works extra nice as a single block study, don't you think?

Simple & Sweet:  I never find cute fabric like this! Extra simple runner -oval framed with bias binding before cool border fabric- showcases fun fabrics. sorry only partial pic.

....And the storm stayed away until I returned to my own neighborhood:)
It's been a busy month with emergency plumbing and car repairs. Focus between surprises has been to try and  finishing witch hats for the RHQ Etsy Shop, so I haven't stopped to put up Holiday decorations yet. Mini quilt show was just what I needed to get in the holiday spirit.

Quilter Kathy MacCleary

I was sew fortunate to spend Saturday morning at the Museum visiting with Kathy MacCleary and her amazing tiny stitches.

Hand quilting!

 

 Red & white thread for r/w EPP.

 

 Tiny Drunkards Path (nearly - corner to corner pieces) baby quilt.

 

  Kathy's signature continuous Rosette hand-quilting shows well in this baby quilt pic.

 

 

I put Nanette's button ring in the picture so you can see these tiny hexies really are 1".

 

 I think this one is my favorite: Broderie Perse with hexie flower "rain." And rare machine stitching here. [Bad picture, sorry.]

 

Or this one! Kathy says finishing this quilt helped her recover from a stroke.

Kathy matched all the naps in every tiny plaid and gingham!!!  

Hand quilted - oh yes, she did!

 

Even the "T"s are matched!

Kathy says, "When your first quilt is Cathedral Window, everything else seems easy."
