Silk Quilt

Here is a vintage treasure from the RHQEtsy shop:

Full silk quilt!

Trip Around the World patched in silk, with silk panels for backing. Tied, no batting. Very heavy. One of the green silks shattered but the rest is in surprisingly excellent shape. And best of all.....

Silk prairie point border:)
This genuinely makes be smile. I mean, you couldn't put binding on the silk, right? So the quilter had to invent a different edging.

Wow, they sure were dedicated to making this quilt happen. I hope it finds a good home soon.

New Quilt Formats

Inspired by @AngieQuilts :)
Once upon a time...my first FB friend sent me this WOW! thread painted postcard!!
I had never seen anything like it! I believe Angie pioneered thread-painting in this new medium.

While I still haven't quite got the hang of thread painting and fabric printing like Angie does,

I have been playing with the magic postcard interfacing

 

and..........

 

its perfect for quilted jewelry!

 

It took many tries to work out the finishing details over the years since I received Angie's lovely Sunflower Postcard all the way from Cheadle, UK,

but here at last is Hexagon Cuff

Waiting for Santa Bear

Christmas is coming and Santa is almost on his way. How will you ever stand the wait? Fortunately, Mom has made a buddy to ease the impatient.

He's already for Santa with his night cap and quilt.

You can take off his accessories to wash or be stored easily. 

Mom has many more different color schemes. This is a classic, though.

Liberty Angel Quilt

Even in summer, some houses become so cold that you think you can see snow falling, but if you turn off the air conditioning the whole house becomes a sun. Mom's new Flag Day quilt is the perfect size for a lap quilt to keep you warm from your air conditioner. Or maybe it will be a baby quilt for a cute little someone with a summertime birthday. I would like to take this quilt on a trip to a cabin by a lake. Perfect for picnic and watching fireworks! Plus, if you're looking for matching decors, Mom also made a matching mugrugs (check 'em out here). 

If you look closely, you can see stars quilted allover. 

Those quilted stars from the above picture are stitched by following the stars on the backing fabric! Nice pattern, right? 

 See that yellow star? Mom had the best idea of putting yellow and red stars on the inner border, applique style! Hearts are quilted in the red corner blocks. 

She also made round corners with the Dresden patches of the outer border. And there is crappy binding to match the red and blue sequencing.

 Mom found this awesome Liberty Angel fabric which is the main panel in the middle.

Vintage quilt upcycled

 

I found a too well used but really lovely Depression Era Northern Star quilt when I was vintage hunting with my neighbor Mary this Spring. It had already been cut down, so it was oddly sized and wouldn't work on a bed. The new binding was crooked and hideous, and plenty of stains remained, poor old quilt. But it was still too precious to leave unloved in a crowded shop, so I brought had to it home. Finally I decided that Northern Star would be happier repurposed into a new vintage treasure that could be shared and loved all over again.

 

But I couldn't cut into it. Couldn't do it. So I asked my Twitter Friends for help. @JeanneGwin of The Learning Curve Quilts and Such wrote this amazing poem, just that quick:

 

Bless this quilt, Oh Lord I pray.

To the owner I say;

Thank you for leaving me this quilt today.

I'm repurposing it in a wondrous way.

Making the Gardener's Picking Apron

Remember how you voted on which vintage apron to make from our book review How to Make Aprons? Well, Mom did it! She combined the Pickers Apron (pg. 69) and the Gardening Apron (pg. 84) to make the ultimate one-of-a-kind Gardener's Picking Apron.

Mom made the apron with with recycled fabric from this denim work shirt.

 Mom uses plates and duct tape for her drafting tools.

Sewing Tip of the Day:  

if you don't know witch is the right side, put a piece of tape on the right side to mark it.

These are the cool buttons for balancing the strings you pull to make a pocket. They are made from pottery and have Celtic Knots on them.

This is how the apron is used. Gather the string to make a basket. Add your own belt.
